NUMISM-L Ancient Coin Discussion Group FAQ

How To Subscribe
List Procedures
NUMISM-L is an unmoderated email list dedicated to ancient and medieval numismatics. It is active (5-10 messages a day) and SPAM free. Both newcomers and the experienced collectors and scholars are welcome. Some commercial announcements (such as auction starts or fixed list availability) are allowed, but the posting of individual items for sale are not. Binary posts are also actively discouraged.

To subscribe:
Send an email message to listserv@vm.sc.edu with the body of the message being:

subscribe NUMISM-L first name last name

For example when I subscribed, I sent a message with this body:

subscribe NUMISM-L Kevin Barry

To Unsubscribe:
Simple send a message to listserv@vm.sc.edu with the body being:

SIGNOFF NUMISM-L

For subscribing and unsubscribing you will receive a short email message as confirmation. When you subscribe, you will also receive an email message with some handy list information.

NUMISM-L

***LIST PROCEDURES***

This message is distributed occasionally as a reminder to subscribers regarding some standard communication procedures.....

1. Contributions to the discussion list should be sent to: NUMISM-L@VM.SC.EDU -- mail sent to this address will be distributed to the entire 700-person subscriber list.

Hint: Include a brief description of your message in the SUBJECT field- this will make it easier for those receiving a digest of the list to locate your communication.

PLEASE use this address only for messages to be broadcast to the entire membership; other kinds of messages should be sent as described below. For example, little personal notes like Thank yous to specific indivi- duals should be sent to the persons concerned, and "test messages" should never be sent to the list. Finally, in case a person does make a mistake and *accidentally* post something to the list that does not belong there, please do not exacerbate the situation by *purposely* posting to the list something that does not belong there. This includes responses to SPAMs. Nor will we tolerate flames (that is, posts that are ad hominem rather than related to the discussion topic).

N.B. When replying directly to a posting *do not* hit the reply key, as this will send your reply to the entire list. For individual replies, you must enter the recipients address manually.

N.B. Please do *not* include a copy of the message you are replying to unless it is an integral part of your response. And please refrain from including attachments (either images or encoded files) with messages posted to the list as such attachments will be intelligible and of interest to only a small minority of subscribers, but will use up storage space and bandwith of everyone.

2. NUMISM-L is a publicly funded, strictly *non-commercial* discussion list. We do permit and even encourage *brief* announcements of sale catalogues based upon the following format:

"The XYZ Company announces the availability of fixed price/auction cata- logue no.xxx, which contains xxx lots of coins of ancient and medieval interest. Interested parties may respond directly to the following address (or access the following website)."

Two hard copies of catalogues announced on the list should be forwarded to the Columbia address below for inclusion in list files. Such announcements should not include detailed lists of catalogue contents, and under no circumstances should include prices. Nor are individual coins to be offered for sale or trade on the discussion list. Violators of these guidelines will be subject to the immediate termina- tion of their list participation.

Likewise, messages dealing with requests for coin catalogues or for the sales of particular coins should be forwarded to the particular individuals concerned, and are *absolutely* not to be posted to the list itself.

3. Messages to the list owners should be sent to:

Ralph Mathisen (S. Carolina) N330009@VM.SC.EDU
Snail mail: History, Univ. of S. Carolina, Columbia, S.C. 29208 or

William Metcalf (ANS) METCALF@AMNUMSOC.ORG American Numismatic Society, Broadway at 155th St, N.Y. 10032

To subscribe: Send a single-line message
SUBSCRIBE NUMISM-L first-name last-name
to LISTSERV@VM.SC.EDU
N.B. You may post messages *only* using the address under which you originally subscribed. If you address changes, you must unsubscribe under the old one and resubscribe under the new. Please note that all too often systems (ranging from university computer centers to Compu- serve) will unilaterally change one's address. This will result in postings to the list being bounced if the subscription address is not updated.

4. A number of other procedures may be carried out by sending mail to LISTSERV@VM.SC.EDU with a one-line message, e.g. UNSUBSCRIBE NUMISM-L ... will remove you from the list N.B. You must send this message using the userid you subscribed under. If your EMAIL address changes for any reason, you should unsubscribe under the old address and resubscribe under the new one. GET NUMISM-L LOGyymmw (where yy is the year, mm is the month, w the week; e.g. GET NUMISM-L LOG95124 will get the 4th week of December, 1995) This feature allows newcomers to catch up on past discussion topics. N.B. You must "receive" the file to get rid of the garbage characters. SET NUMISM-L DIGEST ... will give you a daily, single copy of all notes sent each day. It will keep you from receiving each post individually.
SET NUMISM-L REPRO ... will send you a copy of your own postings
SET NUMISM-L NOMAIL ... will keep mail from being sent to you
SET NUMISM-L MAIL ... will enable mail to be sent to you again
Remember: These commands are sent as one-line messages to LISTSERV. Do not send these kinds of messages to the NUMISM-L address, as they then will be broadcast to the entire subscription list. HINT: Send these messages *exactly* as described above -- any variation will result in their rejection. E.g, if you include your name or your userid in an UNSUBSCRIBE command (or any command), it will be rejected.

5. Be careful about using automatic forwarding or using cc: -- an incorrect E-MAIL address here can result in all kinds of error messages that get routed back to the listowners with every distribution.

6. Please feel free to refer any technical questions to Ralph Mathisen at the address above.

7. Subscribers are reminded that the focus of the list is Ancient and Medieval Numismatics, broadly defined. Please use your best judgment as to whether a topic is sufficiently germane as to be broadcast over the list.
